Première rencontre avec la Ligue Nationale d'Improvisation - First encounter with the National Improvisation League

Ce soir, nous sommes allés au pub Le Saint-Ciboire pour assister à notre premier match d'improvisation théâtrale. Pour la petite histoire: le match d'improvisation a été créé en 1977 au Québec. Le déroulement du match parodie le hockey sur glace.
Deux équipes de 7 personnes (3 joueurs, 3 joueuses et un coach) s'affrontent dans une mini patinoire de hockey (environ 5m sur 6m) en bois dans une tenue réglementaire (pantalon de sport noir, T-shirt, baskets et maillot). Le match est présenté et animé par un maître de cérémonie (MC). Un musicien ou DJ joue pour chauffer la salle au moment où les équipes se concertent. Un arbitre se charge de faire respecter les règles et de comptabiliser les scores. Ils portent la même tenue que les arbitres de hockey.
L'arbitre tire au hasard les thèmes (inconnus des joueurs) et indique la forme que l'impro prendra en faisant varier plusieurs éléments:

• la nature: mixte qui permet aux deux équipes de jouer ensemble ou comparée où les deux équipes se succèdent sur la patinoire.
• le titre ou thème: un mot ou une courte phrase choisi par l'arbitre
• le nombre de joueurs: libre ou imposé
• la catégorie: catégorie de style (à la manière d'un auteur, d'un genre théâtral, cinématographique, télévisuel, littéraire), catégorie d'expression (rimée, chantée, sans parole, silencieuse), catégorie conceptuelle (poursuite: une équipe commence et l'autre doit terminer l'impro, playback: des comédiens jouent dans l'arène et les autres membres de l'équipe font les voix, croisement: un joueur de chaque équipe commencent une impro et au signe de l'arbitre, ils échangent leur personnage...) et catégorie par ajout (musique ou accessoires sont ajoutés et doivent être pris en compte).
• la durée: généralement de 30 secondes à 8 minutes

A la fin de la lecture du carton, les équipes ont 20 secondes pour se coacher. A la fin de chaque improvisation, le public vote à l'aide d'un carton de couleur ou signe associé à chaque équipe pour la meilleure prestation. Un point est alors accordé à l'équipe qui remporte l'improvisation. Le match se déroule en 3 périodes de 20 à 30 minutes chacune. A la fin du match, l'équipe qui remporte le plus de points est déclarée gagnante.
A tout moment au cours du match, le public peut manifester son ennui en jetant une savate sur la patinoire.
Pas de savate pendant la soirée! C'était vraiment chouette et on a bien rigolé même si on ne comprenait pas toujours tout ce qui se disait entre le fort accent et le vocabulaire. Mais c'était franchement drôle.

Contexte: on n'a pas vraiment de contexte pour celui là puisque c'était durant une de leur impro et qu'on n'a compris ce qu'il voulait dire qu'une fois l'improvisation terminée!

For our english friends:

Tonight, we went to the pub to see our first theatresports match, improvisational theatre. For the story: the concept has been developed in 1977 in Quebec. Improvisation match parodies hockey games.

Two teams of 7 persons (3 men, 3 women and 1 coach) battle in a miniature wooden hockey arena (about 5x6m) in a specific dress code (black sport trousers, T-shirt, baskets, hockey jersey). The match is presented by a master of ceremony (MC). A musician or a DJ plays to warm up the audience when teams are planning their next improvisation. A referee makes sure that rules are respected and counts the scores. He is wearing the same suit than a hockey referee.

The referee chooses themes at random (unkown of the players) and announces the kind of improvisation the players will have to do in varying some elements:

• nature: mixed which allows both teams to play together or compared where both teams follow one another in the arena
• title or theme: a word or a short sentence chosen by the referee
• number of players: free or fixed
• category: category of style (as an author, as a theatrical, literary, cinematographic, televisual style), category of expression (rhymed, sung, without words, silent), conceptual category (pursuit: a team starts and the other one has to finish, playback: comedians play in the arena and other members of the team do the voices, crossing: a player of each team start the improvisation and, when the referee tells so, they have to switch their characters...) and category by addition (music or accessories are added to the scene and must be used during the improvisation).
• time: generally between 30 seconds and 8 minutes

When the referee finishes to read the instructions, teams have 20 seconds to prepare themselves. At the end of each improvisation, the audience votes with a coloured paper or sign attributed to each team for the best performance. One point is given to the winning team. The match happens in 3 periods of 20-30 minutes each. At the end of the match, the team who has more points wins the match.
During the match, the audience can show they're bored by throwing a shoe on the stage. We did not have any during our night! It was really fun and we laughed a lot even though we did not understand everything that has been said due to the accent and the vocabulary. But it was really funny!
